To start off, I was a big Spider-man and Superman fan as a kid. I knew of Thor from the 60's cartoons that would occasionally air on TV in the late seventies and early eighties. Later on as I got more into comics I discovered the Avengers and the awful hostess ads running through the books around the time. I didn't read any Thor books until the early nineties. It was "The Black Galaxy Saga" issue 419, that was my real introduction to the thunder god. After on the advice of friends I picked up Thor 337 and 338. Writer/artist Walt Simonson blew my mind! Beta Ray Bill was also Thor?Nick Fury? A S.H.E.I.L.D. Helli carrier? What a great start to an epic run! Simonson was one of my favourite artists on marvels Star Wars title. Between the Superman books, the Spider-man books, Star Trek books and anything Batman or Image, I eventually bailed on Goldilocks. Mostly financially motivated but the stories were becoming a chore to read. Yes I know I was reading Image books so insert the jokes about the lack of characterization, and plot here.
Marvel really started to flounder with their non x books or spider titles not giving them the same spotlight that they previously enjoyed. I came back in 1995 with Warren Elis and Mike Deodatos "World Engine" story line, issues 491-494. I read the title briefly until 505 and walked away. Being a starving student did not leave much money left for comics. Fast forward to 2010 I begin reading Thor volume two by Jurgens and Romita Jr. which came out in '98 so I was a bit behind. I knew that there was also a volume three written by JMS that I wanted to read from the beginning, in preparation for the film.
The purpose of this blog is that am going to be covering all eras of the thunder god. I will be jumping around chronologically covering my favorite story arcs or landmark issues or some that have just pretty artwork. Eventually I will review some of the mini series and spin offs. So put on your battle helms grab your mythical uru hammers and lets journey into mystery(I couldn't resist) with the mighty Thor!
